下村博文文部科学大臣は、9月25日に行われた定例記者会見にて安倍晋三総理に辞任を申し出たことを明らかにした。また、新国立競技場の計画が撤回された政治的責任をとる形とし、大臣俸給の6か月分を返納するとした。
下村文科相が辞任を申し出たことを明らかにしたのは、9月25日に行われた記者会見でのこと。下村大臣は「新国立競技場の問題に関し、多くの国民に心配をお掛けした」とし、9月24日に安倍総理へ辞任を申し入れたと発表した。
安倍総理は、辞任に関し「辞任には値しないが、（そういうことであれば）受け入れる」としたが、「近々内閣を改造するので、内閣改造までは引き続き大臣を続けてほしい」と慰留したという。下村大臣は、この総理の発言を受け、内閣改造までの残された任期で2020年の東京オリンピック・パラリンピックに向け「もう一度熱い思いをもって日本全体を活性化するような、責任をもった引継ぎをしていきたい」と述べた。
なお、下村大臣の辞任表明により、教育関係者の間には大きな波紋が拡がっている。ネットではこれまで下村大臣のもと推進されてきた「高大接続改革」が頓挫することを危惧する声が挙がっているほか、大学入試改革が継続されることを望む声も多数見受けられる。（リセマム）
献金問題とタカ派的な意見で批判もあった大臣ですが、大学無償化を唱えていたことは余り知られていません。高大接続改革の原動力も含めて、ご自身の教育に対すす情熱は一聴に値します。
